Welcome to my Substack. It’s brand new! It’s going to be about learning disabilities (LD), especially nonverbal LD (NVLD) and twice exceptionality (2E). I have NVLD and I am 2E. There will be no more acronyms introduced in this post. (Did you know that NVLD folk have no sense of humor? It must be so! I read it in a book! By an expert!
Why this, why now
I’ve been writing about NVLD and 2E for a while. I’ve got one book out already (Screwed Up Somehow but not Stupid: Life with a Learning Disability) and a memoir coming out in May (Twice as Weird: A Memoir about Twice Exceptionality). So, one reason for this is to sell books!
But I’d also like to make NVLD and 2E more visible, share some things I’ve learned, hear from you about things you’ve learned or questions you have, and so on.
Community
I want this to be a friendly and supportive community. Be nice to each other. Be nice to me, too. I want us to learn from each other, teach each other, and support each other. You can disagree with me — that’s fine. But don’t be disagreeable — that’s not so fine.
Anyone connected with LD, NVLD, or 2E is welcome. Maybe you have one of these. Maybe your kid does. Or your spouse. Or maybe you’re a special ed teacher, or provide other services or therapies to us. Or maybe you’re just interested. One thing for sure: You know people who are LD. Because everyone knows someone who is LD (although you may not know that they are).
Specifics
Now the Substack guide to writing this post is telling me to “be specific”. But —- I dunno. I’m figuring this out as I go. I can say that I will not overwhelm your inbox. I will post articles and other things I’ve written already about LD, NVLD, and 2E. You’ll get ads for my books. The Substack guide says to say whether you can expect certain posts on specific days. I dunno. Not right now, for sure. Maybe if this takes off. And it says to say what free and paid subscribers get. Again, I’m going to figure it out as I go but for now, I will make it that paid subscribers can comment.
4. Use an image and “subscribe” buttons
They say to use a picture. Here’s what the front cover of my new book will look like:
Finally, Substack says that we should feel free to ignore their advice. Oh good! I hadn’t thought of that! (Remember, we have no sense of humor). But they say to put lots of subscribe buttons, so here’s another one.
Glad to see you writing new essays! Take care, Susan
